{coraline.com} I watched this movie with the kids this weekend. It was a bit dark, but they loved it. My Stella declared "we must own this one" (it was netflix). I loved the visuals and the bit snarky humor of Coraline and of course I loved her funky blue hair. The movie played up imagination and possibility, which I always love. Reminded me a bit of the Nightmare before Christmas (same director, Henert Selick) and Mr Magorium's Wonder Emporium.
Released to theaters in 2009 this stop-motion fantasy film is based on Neil Gaiman's 2002 novel of the same name. It was produced by Laika and written and directed by Henry Selick. Dakota Fanning does the voice of the main character, Coraline Jones- the self proclaimed 11 year old explorer. She is aggravated by crazy adults, not being take seriously for her young age and her outgoing demeanor.
When Coraline moves to an old house, she feels bored and neglected by her parents. She finds a hidden door with a bricked up passage. During the night, she crosses the passage and finds a parallel world where everybody has buttons instead of eyes, with caring parents and all her dreams coming true. When the Other Mother invites Coriline to stay in her world forever, the girl refuses and finds that the alternate reality where she is trapped is only a trick to lure her.
