famine in Africa 2011

Eleven million people are facing a hunger crisis in the Horn of Africa, and they are in desperate need of help.

{washingtonpost.com}
Typically, my blog is all about pretty, crafty, smart, beautiful things in the world. Tonight at home, we were packing up household items for our upcoming move. My son was upset because he thought I threw away some of his toys. He was sniffling and tearing up a bit.

When I look at photos like the ones above, I think it is ridiculous what we complain about in our everyday lives. As a mother of three, I cannot even imagine what the parents in the drought areas of Africa are feeling. They aren't worried about toys, who is going to fold the laundry or whether they have the right shoes for their outfit. They just want to find enough food and water so they can stay alive.

It's terrible and heartbreaking. If this strikes you like it did me... this is what you can do to help.

UNICEF is asking for $31.8 million over the next three months for relief efforts. The money will help provide therapeutic treatment for women and children with severe malnutrition, access to clean drinking water and vaccinations to prevent deadly diseases like measles and polio.

"The earlier we act, the more children we can save. Americans are a generous people, and a little goes a long way -- just $10 can feed a child for 10 days," said Caryl Stern, president of the U.S. Fund for UNICEF.

To help UNICEF's efforts, text "FOOD" to 864233 to donate $10 from the United States or visit the website. Follow this link to make a donation from other countries around the world.

The United Nations World Food Programme has plans to airlift high energy biscuits and highly nutritious supplementary foods for children and pregnant or nursing mothers into southern Somalia.

Donations can be made from various countries online or via text. To donate $10 from the United States, text "AID" to 27722; to donate $5 from Canada, text "RELIEF" to 45678; to donate £3 from the United Kingdom text "AID" to 70303.

bead for life

The Triple Swirl necklace is pretty and elegant with a touch of class. Looks fantastic with both office clothes and eveningwear. It combines three beads together to form larger beads that are joined together by translucent seed beads. This necklace is an original creation by BeadforLife beaders. Approximately 18-21 inches long. $20 USD

The five-strand necklace will fit anyone's wardrobe needs. Full and colorful, it will add pizzazz to your business attire and elegance to your best dress. For a different look twist the five strands around one another. Five strands, all in one, the perfect fit for today's fashion trends. Approximately 18-21 inches long.
$30 USD

Their story:
On our website, you will find stories about fascinating and inspiring people both in Uganda and in other parts of the world. (Check out Meet the Beaders.) Our beaders and tailors are primarily impoverished women who are hardworking, intelligent, and strong in their desire to improve their lives. They make gorgeous handcrafted paper beads from recycled paper and turn them into necklaces, bracelets, and earrings. Because the beaders use recycled, colorful paper, the beads help prevent environmental degradation. What was trash becomes beauty, money, food, and hope.

Click here to see how a bead is rolled

Our goal is for our members to be independent of BeadforLife within 27 months by being able to support themselves within the Ugandan economy. To assist members in launching their own small businesses or in creating new revenue streams, we provide entrepreneurial training, facilitate savings accounts, and make business funds available.

Because our jewelry is hand made from recycled paper, each bead is unique. Over 300 members and many of their family members are currently making beads – perhaps 1000 people in all. The sizes and colors of our items may vary reflecting the uniqueness of the woman who made them.

clorox commercials

{youtube.com}

The music from this commercial is now available in an extended version on the album "the blue sky project: a Clorox charity collection" (the album is only $5.99, good deal).

The album is available on itunes, cdbaby, as well as other online music stores. Proceeds from sales of the CD will benefit Music in Schools Today, a charity that supports music programs in public stores. {mustcreate.org}

{youtube.com} I love those two commercials so much. Great branding that makes bathroom cleaning seem a wonderous joyous adventure.

{youtube.com} one more good one. There is no need for a voice-over, the music is enough.
